This camp will give us a good look into the future of the Flames organization, and it’s sure to be highly competitive. There are few spots open on the Flames Roster, but the general feeling is that a few players will get the chance to rotate into the roster throughout the year. And nobody will forget the chance that Adam Pardy had last season when Jim Vandermeer suffered an injury and was out for a good chunk of the season. This gave Pardy the chance to skate in the NHL and his play improved so much that he’s now a permanent part of the Flames roster.

Such is the way of the NHL… there’s so much talent, and you have to seize the opportunity when it comes your way. Pardy did it last year; which of these 35 players will do it this year?

Prospects Take the Ice

A group of 27 Calgary Flames hopefuls take to the ice today for the annual prospects development camp. The camp will run from Monday to Saturday and all sessions are open to the public.

The group has several names we saw on the ice for the Flames last season, including Matt Pelech (5 games), Brett Sutter (4 games), John Negrin (3 games) and Mikael Backlund (1 game). Only Sutter managed to score a goal, but Pelech (3 assists), Negrin (1 assist) and Backlund had strong showings.

The other notable names in the group are Leland Irving and Matt Keetly (who backstopped the flames AHL affiliate team last season), Keith Seabrook, and Greg Nemisz.

The sessions start today at 3:30pm and at 9:00am for the rest of the week.

The Calgary Flames have signed forward Dan Ryder. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Ryder, the Flames fourth round pick in 2005, is in his fourth season with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League. He currently sits fifth in league scoring with 24 goals and 59 points.

Ryder is currently serving a 10 game suspension for abuse of an official.

The native of Bonavista, Newfoundland & Labrador, was named Playoff MVP during the 2005-06 season as he led the Petes to the OHL championship and a berth in the Memorial Cup. In 225 career OHL games, he has recorded 111 goals and 164 assists for 275 points.
