The Calgary Flames selected left-winger Sven Baertschi with the 13th pick in the NHL draft tonight in St. Paul Minnesota. It was their first 1st round pick since they selected Tim Erixon 23rd overall in the 2009 NHL Draft.
Swiss-born Baertschi was the Western Hockey League rookie of the year last season and led all first-year players with 34 goals and 51 assists in 66 games for the Portland Winterhawks.
Baertshic, who measures 5′ 10″ and tips the scales at 181-pounds also ranked first among WHL rookies in playoff scoring and was tied for second overall with 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in 21 games.
The Flames have two picks in the 2nd round as well as subsequent picks in the 4th and 6th rounds.
