Miikka Kiprusoff made 28 saves to earn his league-leading 30th win of the season, and Matthew Lombardi, Andre Roy and Adrian Aucoin scored goals as the Calgary Flames won 3-1 to sweep their season series with the Nashville Predators tonight.
Andre Roy’s game winning goal at 12:25 of the 2nd period was the 35th of his career and his 5th game winner. He was the lucky recipient of a nice pass from Eric Nystrom who broke in on net after Nashville coughed up the puck near centre ice. Nystrom dipsy-doodled around the Nashville defender and made a nice pass to Roy on the other side of the Nashville net. Roy made no mistake in roofing the puck over Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne.
Nashville’s J.P. Dumont also scored his 10th goal of the season in the game. but the Predators could not beat Kiprusoff more than once.
The Flames goaltender played a rock-solid game, and was at his best during the 3rd period when the Predators were trying to tie the game. Kiprusoff had several great saves during the period, but none better than the stop he made on Ryan Jones, who had a wide open net while on the power play. Kipper flung himself across the net and made a stretching save with the paddle of his stick to keep the Flames up 2-1. He was rewarded by chants from the crowd, and evenually a 3-1 lead when Aucoin scored on a 5-on-3 powerplay.
With the win, Calgary moves to 30-14-4, which gives them 64 points and an 11-point lead atop the NW division. The Flames also find themselves 5 points back of Detroit for 2nd place in the Western Conference. The Flames completed January with an 8-3 record and now look towards February with 5 of 13 games against NW division opponents.
