It was a points bonanza for the San Jose Sharks tonight as they capitalized on 4 powerplays to beat the Flames 6-1 in the Shark Tank. Milan Michalek and Joe Pavelski had 2 goals apiece, and Rob Blake, Christian Erhoff and Dan Boyle each had 3 assists.
The game would have been a lot different if the Flames had not allowed 4 goals in the first period, including 3 on the powerplay. But it was evident in the first period which team came out to play. The Sharks dominated the game for the first 20 minutes, peppering Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff with 20 shots en route to 45 total shots in the game. The Sharks set a club record in their previous game with 57 shots.
Flames coach Mike Keenan pulled Kiprusoff after the first period and replaced him with backup goaltender Curtis McElhinney. Kipper allowed 4 goals but they were not really his fault. Three goals were scored on 2nd chances that could have gone the other way. San Jose was very fortunate tonight as they got all the right bounces. More than once, they ended up with the puck on their sticks while looking at an open net… and didn’t disappoint their fans.
San Jose goaltender Brian Boucher had his shutout broken when Mike Cammalleri scored the lone goal for the Flames on the powerplay halfway through the 3rd period.
This was the first match between the Flame and the Sharks since San Jose knocked the Flames out of the Playoffs last season. The win was the 10th of the season at home for the Sharks and keeps them in first place in the NHL with 29 points.
the Flames now have 4 days off before a home-and-away series against the Colorado Avalanche.
