After dropping consecutive one-goal decisions in Toronto and Montreal, the Calgary Flames, fittingly, wrapped up their eastern road trip with another narrow defeat.

Brad Boyes scored 18 seconds in and the Boston Bruins never surrendered the lead en route to a 3-2 victory over the Flames on Thursday night in Boston.
Glen Murray notched a pair of goals and Marc Savard picked up two assists for the Bruins, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

“The difference between how we played on the road and how we played tonight is that we weren’t scrambling as much,” Boyes said. “Tonight we were all on the same page.”

Daymond Langkow and Alex Tanguay replied for the Flames, who went 1-2-1 on an eastern trek that featured four one-goal games.

The Flames power play, which had struggled to a Western Conference-worst 7.1 per cent success rate heading into Thursday’s contest, didn’t get many chances to redeem itself, going 0-for-3.

Stephane Yelle left the ice on a stretcher late in the second period after suffering an ankle injury when he stumbled and was pushed into the end boards by Boston defenceman Jason York.

“He went into the boards awkwardly and he jammed up his ankle,” Flames coach Jim Playfair said of Yelle, who gave the thumbs-up sign as he was being carted off. “He’ll fly home with us tonight and we will get it checked out.”

Yelle has a goal and two assists this season, his 11th in the NHL.

“You really don’t know what to think when something like that happens,” Flames forward Jeff Friesen said. “It deflated us and we obviously had a letdown.”

The Bruins, playing their first game at home this season, received a warm reception from the crowd prior to the opening face-off, then quickly repaid the support. Savard made a nice pass in front of the net to Boyes, who beat Mikka Kiprusoff 18 seconds into the game.

“It was nice to have our own fans behind us,” Bruins captain Zdeno Chara said. “We know we can play the way we did tonight and we had to prove it to ourselves.”

Boston went up 2-0 midway through the first period when Murray accepted a feed in the slot from Patrice Bergeron and snapped a shot between Kiprusoff’s legs.

Calgary got on the board late in the second thanks to some nice work by Jarome Iginla. The Flames captain beat two Bruins to the puck behind the net, then banked a pass off the side of the goal to Langkow, who flipped it past Hannu Toivonen.

The goal sparked a brief flurry of chances for Calgary, but the Flames could not score.

That allowed Boston to restore its two-goal lead with 36 seconds left in the period courtesy of Murray’s second of the night, a one-timer off a rebound that came on a Bruins power play.

Tanguay brought the Flames within a goal near the halfway point of the third when he took a pass from Matthew Lombardi in the Boston zone, streaked in on goal and beat Toivonen with a quick move to the backhand.

Calgary had a good chance to even the game with 5:45 to play when ex-Flame Shean Donovan was whistled for holding, but the power play once again failed to convert.
