Dion Phaneuf scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Calgary Flames to a 5-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes tonight. With his 19th goal of the season, Phaneuf passed the Calgary Flames rookie record for goals by a rookie defencemen. The previous record of 18 was set by Gary Suter in 1985-1986.

The Flames had balanced scoring again tonight, with 6 players registering 2 points tonight: Phaneuf (1G,1A), Langkow (1G,1A), Huselius (1G,1A), Stefan Yelle (1G,1A) Hamrlik (2A), Amonte (2A). Jarome Iginla also scored for the Flames.

Phoenix’s goals were scored by Shane Doan and Geoff Sandersen.

Miikka Kipursoff also tied a Calgary Flames club record with his 39th win of the season. He tied Mike Vernon‘s 39 wins set in the 1987-1988 season, and has 6 more games to beat the record this season. Kiprusoff‘s 39 wins also ties Marty Turco for the most wins in the NHL this season.

With tonight’s victory the Calgary Flames surpassed their point total (94) from the 2003-2004 season. They have 6 games remaining and are 5 points up on Colorado in the Northwest Division.

To secure a spot in the playoffs, Calgary needs to win only one more game this season. To clinch first spot in the Northwest Division, they need a 7 more points in their final 6 games- unless Colorado loses a game or two…
